Maya’s Personal Story

Maya’s Personal Story: “I was 3 days old when I went into surgery for my TEF (tracheoesophageal fistula)”

I was 3 days old when I went into surgery for my TEF (tracheoesophageal fistula) this surgery saved my life. But of course, my life is not perfect currently. I’m 14 years old and still struggle with my swallowing muscles, scar tissue, etc. I am so beyond glad that my surgeon Dr. Langer was able to help me not only survive but live a ‘normal’ life with no feeding tube. That being said a lot of things were impacted from my surgery and it is my normal. My normal is waiting for food to go down, making sure I chew at least 25 times, and my breathing feeling a bit raspy after eating.
